The Giant Chanukiah in Mevaseret Adumim - December 22, 2011 by Admin

Hi Everyone!

This evening, 2nd candle lighting of Chanukah, a group of enthusiastic youths and adults from Ma’ale Adumim built a giant Chanukiah in Mevaseret Adumim.
The Chanukiah was made with approximately 400 candles with sand in falafel bags placed on the side of the mountain. Anyone traveling tonight and tomorrow night on the Jerusalem – Dea Sea highway will be able to see the lit Chanukiah. This is a unique way to publicize the miracle of Chanukah.

Photos of the above can be seen at:

Learning Hebrew from Reading the Bible - November 29, 2011 by Admin

There are many different ways to go about learning Hebrew, but when you use the Bible as a learning tool, you are going to find that it has a whole new meaning. Reading the Bible means that you are going to be learning about the Christian history and the way things should be. However, you are also going to find that even if you have read it before, there is going to be a brand new way of looking at the good book and the understanding that you are going to have of its meaning.

If you have never even read the language before, you will find that you should take a few steps first. The alphabet should be learned and since it is a small list, this should not take you long. Next will come the vowels and then you will need to know the pronunciation of them combined. Once you have this down, learning Hebrew from reading the Bible will be much easier and it will take you less time to get through the words. You don’t want to get frustrated while trying to read.

As you begin reading, you may find that you feel as though you are back in school sounding out the words to make sure that you get them right. After you get through a few of the pages your reading will become more fluent and you will start to feel more comfortable as well. You will find that as you are learning Hebrew from the Bible, the wording is shorter as it takes fewer words to say the meaning than it does when you are using the English translation. If you find yourself stuck on a word you can use an English/Hebrew translation dictionary to help.

There are many online resources that you can use for learning Hebrew this way. With all of the technology and online help that you can receive, there are videos and even audio recording that you can listen to that will help you to translate the wording. But once you have learned how to break down the words and sound them out, reading the Bible will become easy and less frustrating. But again, it is important to get the basics down with the alphabet and the vowel system. This will help you in knowing how to pronounce the words so you have a better understanding.

As you get better at reading the language you are going to see that it is very smooth and what once sounded like something strange and foreign to you will become beautiful and harmonic. The meaning behind the words is very deep and fulfilling and in learning Hebrew from the Bible you will be able to get a true sense of that meaning. Not only is it educational but you may even find that a whole new light will be shed on the book that you once thought you understood inside and out. It is a great way to not only learn the language but to have a deeper understanding of who you are.

Choosing the Right Hebrew School - November 27, 2011 by Admin

Making the choice of the right school for learning Hebrew is much like choosing the right school for any other part of your education. You want to know that you are going to get the most out of your classes and that you are going to get the attention that you need in order to learn the class. There are many different options that you can go with and the best thing that you can do is a little research until you find the one that fits your needs the best and that you are comfortable with.

If you are one that likes to travel, then of course you can go internationally and take a class that it taught in Israel. There is nothing like learning Hebrew from those that know it the best. But, if you are not planning on taking a trip there anytime soon, you may want to find a school that is closer to home for learning. You have the option of going to a school each day to learn or you can sign up for a class that is taught online. Either choice can be a good one.

As you are looking into the places that teach this language, you are going to want to find one that actually specializes in the teachings. Finding a teacher that comes from a background of Hebrew will give you a better understanding of it and it can also make learning Hebrew much more fun and interesting as well. Once you start looking into different schools you will see that there are educational places that teach only language, which means that you will not have the distraction of other types of classes. It also means that they are going to be focused on what you came to learn.

In trying to make the decision on which institution you would like to attend, it is important to know where you are in your knowledge and how far you would like to go in learning Hebrew. Are you a beginner, intermediate or are you ready for the final phase in your learning? All of this is going to play a role in your decision making as some schools will only take your knowledge so far while others can take you from the beginning to the very end in your learning.

Taking on the task of a foreign language can be hard for some. Looking for a school that can provide you with the personal attention that you need and the extra help in order to understand can be a big plus. If you can find a school for learning Hebrew that has small classes so the teacher can provide individual attention when needed is also a big advantage as well. The larger the class the less time the teacher is going to be able to spend with the students and you could find yourself falling behind. Check them out thoroughly and ask questions so you are absolutely comfortable that you will receive the best learning experience that you can.

Learning Hebrew

For the Beginner - November 19, 2011 by Admin

For the beginner, learning Hebrew may seem a little difficult at first. Of course you are very excited to get started with your lessons and start speaking the words and using them in a sentence but it is important to start with the basics so that you can have a place to start. As with any language, including your native tongue, you need to start with the alphabet and learn the letters. Once you have them committed to memory, the next steps will feel like a walk in the park. Without this step, you may find yourself struggling.

After you have learned the alphabet you will be ready to take the next step which is vowels. You will find that these consist of dots above or below some of the letters. The dots are going to change the sound and the meaning of the words. Although this may seem strange at first, you will get the hang of it and find that the sentences seem shorter than what you are normally accustomed to. With a little practice this will become second nature to you as well and it will become less difficult when learning Hebrew.

One of the best ways to commit the letters and vowels to memory is to write them as you are learning them. You will find that there are special books you can purchase that are made for just this specific purpose. As you open the book for the first time, you are going to find that the lines and the spacing are different than what you are used to. This is because they are written in a different manor. For some, this can be the most difficult part of learning Hebrew since you have to learn a whole new way of writing as well as speaking.

Now that you have mastered the letters and vowels you will be ready to start forming words and speaking them. In taking your course for learning Hebrew, it can be very beneficial if you can actually listen to someone pronounce the words. It will give you a better understanding and you will know if you are saying them correctly. There are many videos that you can watch on the internet to do this part and there are also audio CD’s that you can purchase to listen to while you are driving, or even just sitting at home.

These are the basic steps that you will need in order to learn the language. Reading goes from right to left and you are going to learn this once you get the wording and the pronunciation down. You will not know everything that there is to know at this point but you will be able to speak sentences and talk with someone comfortably. Learning Hebrew takes time just as it does with any language even if it is going to be your native tongue. By starting out slowly and getting the knowledge that you need to move on to intermediate and more advanced classes, you will find that the language is beautiful.
