The Hebrew Journals Pilot Project is the result of an extensive collaboration with the University of Haifa Library and the National Library of Israel to digitize, test and make available the complete back runs of four core journals published in Hebrew. This Pilot represents an effort to preserve and expose these critical materials to a broader audience. — JSTOR description of Project

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, “writing the first draft of Jewish history since 1917″ has opened its digital archive containing 250,000 articles covering Jewish news around the world from 1923 to the present. http://archive.jta.org/ . This is an essential resource for students of modern Jewish history. The agency tracked antisemitism around the world and covered the Holocaust as it was happening. It also covered events behind the Iron Curtain and maintained correspondents in Israel. It provides coverage of American Jewish history as well. –Barbara Bibel
The first 100 numbers of Katedra and of Pe'amim have been put online and searchable, by Yad Yitzhak ben Zvi. (Thank you, Hillel, for bringing this to my attention).

As you many of you know in 2011 we received a ,000 grant from the Littauer foundation to hire a cataloger to work on the Brisman collection. Below is an update from Will Soll, the Judaica cataloger, who began working with these rare Brishman books in September. Will has been doing a great job working with the Brisman books for which we are all deeply appreciative.
The majority of the 40 or so titles we’ve cataloged so far are rare Hebrew books whose dates range from 1574-1811. They attest to a widespread phenomenon of Jewish publishing from places such as Venice, Livorno, Metz, Prague, Jessnitz, Furth, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Many of the books in the collection are commentaries on the Torah or Talmud, such as Moses ben Israel’s Shomer Emunim (Guardian of the Faith). It was published in 1723 in Offenbach, Germany by Bonaventura de Launoy[1], a Christian pietist, who had been encouraged by Jewish printer Israel ben Moses to obtain the requisite set of Hebrew letters and ornamentation and add Hebrew books to his catalogue.
Other books fill other needs of the Jewish community. One volume, Gemilut ḥasadim (Deeds of Kindness) contains the rules and bylaws of a hevra kaddisha, a Jewish burial society. It was published in Amsterdam in 1810 by Jacob Proops, son of Samuel Proops, who founded the publishing house in 1730. Proops and his sons were the primary publisher of Ashkenazi Jewish books in Amsterdam for more than a century. On the title page are images of a skull, an hourglass, a candle, and gravedigging paraphernalia, along with the text from Ecclesiastes “to everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” The rules themselves alternate between Hebrew and Yiddish.
We also have a 1793 reprint of the first Hebrew geography, Iggeret Orḥot 'Olam (Letter on the Ways of the World), written by Abraham Farissol c. 1524. It contains the first mention of America in a Hebrew book. In this reprinted edition, it is supplemented by two short religious works by Maimonides and Ibn Ezra respectively. One surmises that the book was created as a textbook that served a Jewish educational curriculum combining both secular and religious subjects. — Will Soll
[1] In Hebrew the place name is rendered “Ofi Bakh” (אפי באך) and the publisher “Bona Fentura de Lanay”

Large portions of the archives of the Israel Broadcasting Authority are now open to listening on the web, after digitization at the National Sound Archive [part of the National Library of Israel]. The materials include mostly Hebrew songs, but also Yiddish songs, religious materials and a limited portion of Israeli concert music. Searching is in Hebrew only.
There are currently two available databases, that differ in the original format of the recordings.
1. Recordings from the 1950s [originally recorded on internal non-commercial records] at the Israeli Broadcasting Authority website http://www.iba.org.il/zemerivri/
The complete details of the items appear in the catalog of the National Sound Archives [shelf number begins with K]
2. Recordings from the 1960s and early 1970s [originally on tapes], available directly from the website of the National Sound Archives. This link gets you to the searchable sound catalog. [Main menu is also available in English, but details in Hebrew only].
